1. Will there be anyone to pick me up from Norfolk Airport even if its an unearthly hour?
YES!We'll make sure there will be someone to pick you guyz up(Since the picker is arranged in the last minute,please DO NOT BOMB us by asking "Who is going to pick us up?".All you need is to fill an online form in the ISA website.We promise to pick u up 100%.
2.How about Temp accomodation?
All the new students are alloted a temp acco with an older student for 2 weeks.In the mean time,the new students will look for new apartment and sign a lease. Typically, a single bedroom apt costs around $550 and a double bedroom apt costs $800 around ODU. Most of the students get a new apt within a week.So dont worry about it.
3.What kind of money do I carry?
Traveller's Cheque is ideal.There are 2 banks near ODU.Bank of america DOESNT require a Social security number to start an account.Chartway bank requires Social Security Number(SSN).We'll help you in this aspect once you guys are here.
4.How do I register for classess?How do I decide which subjects to take first sem?
Talk to your department seniors once you are here.For the books there would be contacts in ISA site,mail them to ask about the books (Its costs a fortune to buy books here)Registration of classes could be done online once you have cleared the
paperwork with your department and international office.
5.What about assistantships?
My apologies.I have no authority to answer this question.It's your skill to convince the potential employer.Do not give up.Persistance works!
6.What kind of clothes do I carry?
It gets hot and humid in summer and really cold (3-4 degrees) in winter.So you decide what to bring.Bedding and other stuffs can be bought here.
7.How does health system work?
Every student should have a health insurance before registration.Dont worry,there are cheap insurance available for students here.The only thing is,get your vaccines done in India.You would have a list of vaccines in your admission package.They are bit expensive here.
8.What do I carry in my hand luggage?
The most important stuffs are,Passport, I-20, your tickets and contact addressess of your Graduate program director and the International students office.Make copies of them and have a copy in all your luggages.Port of entry can be any place in US (Say Chicago,New York....)where you land first and talk to the immigration officer.He would staple a sheet of paper called I-94 in your passport.Keep it safe.And about Luggage, once you have cheked them in in India, you can collect them in the baggage collecting area in Norfok airport.
9.Can we believe you?
Ha..ha.Dont worry people,We have a large Indian Student population here representing almost all states.So you will never feel out of place.You wont feel like Alice in wonderland!We promise.
10.Will someone mail me with anymore details?
We,at ISA will do our best to answer your questions.But please accept the fact that we are humans and we put lot of effort in picking up and accomodations.When we say we'll be there,We mean it!
11.How to fill the Health Services Form?
ODU - Health services form should be filled and certified by a practicing doctor. Please donot leave any field blank as it will only lead you to take those medications here. Try getting all required vaccines/medications in India only. This way its less expensive. |
