ZETA PHI BETA Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. was founded January 16, 1920 on the campus of Howard University in Washington D.C. The Zeta Phi Beta sorority founders, who are referred to as the Five Pearls, are Pearl Anna Neal, Myrtle Tyler Faithful, Arizona Cleaver Stemons, Fannie Pettie Watts, and Viola Tyler Goings. The founders created Zeta Phi Beta because they felt that elitism and socializing had overshadowed what should be the real mission of sororities, which is to address and correct the problems of society, particularly in the African-American community. The Five Pearls believed that zeal or active interest, high principles and standards, and a good scholarly average were the things that should determine membership rather than having a certain look or status. The sorority was founded on the principles of Service, Scholarship, Sisterly Love, and Finer Womanhood. The Radiant, True, and Oh so BLUE Rho Nu Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. was founded on November 15, 1987 by a woman with a vision, who felt that at the time, Old Dominion was lacking the qualities of a true sorority. Over the last 18 years, amidst the numerous awards and accolades received, Rho Nu has earned the title of being a down to earth and approachable chapter. Our focus on quality, and not quantity has sustained the chapter thus far, and continues to push us in our efforts to serve the campus community, encourage education and social involvement, as well as promote service to our campus and surrounding community. Unique to all other Greek organizations, Zeta Phi Beta shares a constitutionally bound relationship with Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc., making the Blue and White family the only true Greek family. Phi Beta Sigma saw a need on the Howard campus for a sorority that shared their own high ideals and values and thus became very instrumental in helping Zeta Phi Beta become established. Though over eighty years have passed since the Blue and White family inception, the love between the brothers of Phi Beta Sigma and sisters of Zeta Phi Beta is still strong and very visible in their support of each other.
